Carrey even improvised a fourth wall-breaking moment where the Robotniks acknowledge that the same actor is playing both characters. The next of the classic Universal Monsters to get another fresh new take is the Wolf Man, a hairy beast who’s in very good hands with director Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man).Whannell compares his vision for Wolf Man to Carpenter’s The Thing and Cronenberg’s The Fly, calling it a tribute to the movies he loved from the 1980s. The suggestion there of course is that Whannell’s Wolf Man leans heavily into the body horror of a man transforming into a monster, and he also touches upon the COVID inspirations inherent to the script.

From Universal and Blumhouse, Wolf Man howls into theaters January 17, 2025, and Universal has released a brand new featurette video today along with a new official poster. Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) stars as Blake, a husband and father who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes. With his marriage to wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth). But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter.

“How can you pass up the opportunity for a little wink at the audience? We all really loved the idea too, and it’s also fun to acknowledge the Jim Carrey of it all in that scene,” Fowler says. Beginning with the Universal Monsters classic in 1941 starring Lon Chaney Jr., the Wolf Man character has of course appeared on screen many times over the years. The most recent attempt to introduce the character to a new generation was Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman starring Benicio del Toro, which ultimately ended up failing to kickstart a new “Dark Universe.”

Like its predecessors, Sonic 3’s closing credits tease more fan-favorite character introductions in a potential fourth film that Paramount has in the works. But, at this moment in time, Fowler is solely focused on the release and reception of Sonic 3. A great deal has been said about Captain America: Brave New World's supposed reshoots and test screenings. As of now, it's fair to say this is either much ado about nothing or a sign the movie has been completely overhauled.

“With 30-plus years of characters in the Sonic library, it’s always so exciting to tease new characters at the end of each film,” Fowler shares. “Bringing in new characters can really push us in new directions, and it is very exciting. But, right now, we’re just focused on the release of this third movie, and we’re hoping it will be received well. We’ll see where things go from there.” Based on other pieces of intel that have found their way online in recent months, we believe she's referring to the fact President Ross/Red Hulk now lives, the removal of the Serpent Society, Amadeus Cho's MCU debut, and a stinger setting up a new team of heroes for Avengers: Doomsday.

Below, during a recent conversation with THR, Fowler also discusses the fact that Carrey has now played Robotnik more than any of his other big screen characters. It's true that every MCU movie undergoes a similar production process, though some do more reshoots than others (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, for example, changed its ending weeks before it arrived in theaters). In Captain America: Brave New World, after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam Wilson finds himself in the middle of an international incident.
